What is in Room 426? Something…

The night of March 25 was an unusual one for my reporting partner Haley Brown and I. We went to cover a ghost hunting show at the infamous Old Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk, created by William Butland and Blair McCuiston from App T.V.

Cynical, as most rational journalists are, we did not know what we signed up for… When we arrived at the hospital around 10 p.m. we had our reliable iPad, recording gear and of course, face masks (so we didn’t breathe in asbestos particles) we started off the hunt by taking a tour around the condemned property. The interior of the hospital is covered with spray paint, old medical supplies (yay needles!) and on some days, hobos.

The folks at App T.V. were super into the idea of catching a ghost on camera, however, Haley and I were skeptical and were just along for the ride and to do our project. After aimlessly wandering around the grounds, around 11:50 p.m. the rest of the crew wanted to take us up to Room 426. Supposedly, the room is haunted by a patient who once held a doctor and nurses hostage in the room. However, I cannot verify that claim. What I can verify, is what Haley and I heard and witnessed around midnight on March 26.

Around 8 or 9 people, including Haley and I, piled into the room and got comfortable. (Of course, Haley and I did not sit, because well, broken glass and ASBESTOS) but a few others went ahead and plopped on the ground with their equipment. The room fell dark, and Brandon Wogoman, the leader of the group, started speaking to the room. “Let us know you are here,” he would say, as Haley and I subtly rolled our eyes in the darkness. After a good 10 to 15 minutes of that, something surprisingly happened.

A hunk of porcelain (from a broken sink or toilet, which the hospital had in plenty) was hurled against the wall and landed on the ground. The room collectively shrieked in horror and disbelief, but yet stayed in the room. Another 10 or so minutes passed and Morgan Burns, one of the crew members said he felt something grab his ankles. Shortly thereafter, a locker door slammed shut and then we all vacated the room as quickly as we could.

Haley and I left, struck with horror and utter disbelief. However, it happened. I can’t speak for those who felt something touch them, but I can verify 100 % that a hunk of porcelain was thrown against the wall and the locker door had slammed.

All in all, it was a genuinely spooky night.
